Born in 1931, Ahmed Mannai, the founder of the Doha based Mannai Corporation, commenced his business
career at a young age, establishing the Mannai Trading Company in 1951. These early business activities
centered on trading in automobile spare parts and accessories, but growth and diversification today sees the
Mannai Corporation with widely spread interests in the areas not only of trading but also of engineering,
construction, computer services, oilfield services & equipment and offshore services.The Corporation
has been and remains a pacesetter in Qatar 's business community with a multimillion dollar turnover.

Each of the Mannai Corporation subsidiaries is a leader in its field. Mannai Corporation has become

Mr.Mannai was instrumental in setting up several public companies during 1970s viz., Qatar Cement
Company at Umm Bab in association with Franco Tosi of Italy; Qatar Fertiliser Company with Norsk
Hydro; two Petrochemical plants – one in Qatar and the other one in Dunkirk (France) with Cdf
Chemie, France - a US$ 2 Billion company; the Gulf Hotel, which is now called as Hotel Marriott
and several other huge projects in the development of the modern Qatar. Mr.Mannai was the
founding Director of Qatar National Bank, Qatar Insurance Company, Gulf Publishing and
Printing Organisation – publishers of the English newspaper “The Gulf Times” in Qatar and the
Bahrain based international investment bank, “Investcorp Bank.”
In recognition of his contribution towards the economic and industrial co-operation
between Qatar and France , Mr.Mannai was appointed "Commandeur de la Legion
d'Honneur" by the French Government in April 1986. Earlier, Mr.Mannai was also
awarded the "Gold Medal of the Town of Paris " by the then Mayor of Paris and
the then President of the Republic of France , Mr.Jacques Chirac, in honour
of his distinguished services. In January 1990, Ahmed Mannai was declared
the "Gulf Businessman of the Year" for 1989.
He took retirement from active business life for few years. Being active
for all those years, he felt that he should again contribute and
rededicate his services for development of the nation and for
betterment of the people.

In the mid sixties, with oil revenues rapidly accelerating in the region, Qatar concentrated on carefully diversifying into indigenous industry and reinvesting the profits in its local economy. This was the environment that inspired Ahmed Mannai to develop various industries in Qatar, some of which are detailed hereunder. |

Qatar National Cement Co. was established in 1965 at Umm Bab, to produce Ordinary Portland Cement in sufficient quantity to meet the demand of cement in the State of Qatar. Commercial production from the line erected and commissioned by M/s. Franco Tosi of Itlay based on Semi Dry Process with capacity of 100,000 tpa started on 1st May 1969.
Finding the synergy with the existing activities and keeping in view the demand of the growing industrial sector in State of Qatar, in steel in particular, company proceeded with Calcined Lime Plant of 100 tpd in the year 1978 consisting of a Rotary Kiln with Planetary Cooler and other supporting facilities, Hydrated Lime Plant was added to existing facility in 1985 with a capacity of |
240 tpd. A modern and separate Cement Plant 2 of 2000 tpd clinker production was commissioned in 1998 and Plant No.3 in 2004 with a capacity 4000 tpd of clinker. In continuation to the company’s support of the construction development in the country, the Plant No.4 with a capacity of 5000 TPD Clinker was operational in july 2008 and full plant was commissioned in julay 2009. |

QAPCO was established in 1974 as a joint multinational venture to utilise the associated and non-associated Ethane gas from petroleum production in line with the industrialization plan of the State Qatar. QAPCO commenced commercial production in 1981 and within a short time, was well-established in the global market due to its quality and reliability. The main products of the company are Ethylene and LDPE. Solid sulphur is generated as a by-product in the process. The required feedstock, Ethane gas, is supplied by the state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) for the production of Ethylene ,a significant part. |
